Welcome to the MIT Device Research Laboratory DRL under phd thesis of mechanical engineering direction of Dr. Evelyn Wang in the Mechanical Engineering Department at MIT. The DRL combines fundamental studies of micro and nanoscale heat and mass transport processes with the development of novel nanostructured materials to create innovative solutions in thermal management, thermal energy storage, solar thermal energy conversion, and water desalination.

This approach has led to new and important functionalities to enhance heat and mass transfer for various applications. Congratulations to the AeroShield Materials team left led by DRL alumni Elise Strobach and Kyle Wilke and others for winning the American-Made Solar Prize! Transparent aerogel insulation enables this performance, minimizes heat loss, phd thesis of mechanical engineering, allows for simpler receiver design, and reduces cost.

Congratulations to Youngsup Song for successfully defending his PhD on Mechanistic understanding and enhancing pool boiling heat transfer via surface property and structure design. Phd thesis of mechanical engineering his PhD study, Youngsup investigated the boiling crisis mechanisms during pool boiling associated with surface properties and structures through theoretical and experimental analysis.

Based upon the fundamental understanding, he designed boiling surfaces that significantly enhanced the critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient simultaneously. His thesis has important implications for a variety of boiling applications, where the reliable and accurate estimation and enhancement of boiling heat transfer are critical.

Congratulations to Arny Leroy for successfully defending his PhD on Subambient Passive Cooling Enabled by Polyethylene Aerogels. During his PhD, Arny worked on the development, characterization, and optimization of polyethylene aerogels to achieve a low thermal conductivity material with high solar reflectance and infrared transmittance, phd thesis of mechanical engineering.

Theoretically and experimentally, he investigated the benefits of using polyethylene aerogel covers in outdoor devices exposed to direct sunlight and demonstrated significant passive cooling below the ambient temperature and high subambient cooling power. His contributions show potentials of applications to food produce storage, building cooling, and reduction of CO2 emissions.

Congratulations to Arny Leroy for winning the MIT MechE Wunsch Foundation Silent Hoist and Crane Award for outstanding graduate research on subambient passive cooling enabled by polyethene aerogels, and Geoffrey Vaartstra for winning a MIT MechE Covid Hero award for leading DRL in the ramp-down and ramp-up during the pandemic.
